In general I agree with the Django Admin philosophy of "if you can’t rely on your site administrators to do the right thing, then they shouldn’t be your site administrators" I have to disagree and say that pre-filling an "Authored by" field should be standard practice for app developers.
You have the user logged in and they're authoring the content so it's a logical conclusion that the field shouldn't have to be manually selected.
